Ourense/Orense - Minho Valley, Via de la Plata.
Rising northeast of Lugo, the Minho River sweeps through much of Galicia in a southwest direction and forms part of the border between Spain and Portugal, before it meets the Atlantic Ocean near A Guarda.
Its lower sections run through a little-explored region of vineyards, monasteries and hidden valleys, watering the pleasant Provincial Capital of Ourense on the way.
    Ourense/Orense, population: about 107,500.
Little-visited Ourense is the Capital of Galicia's inland Province, a rural zone with rocky hills and pastured valleys where much wheat is farmed and cheese and wine are made.
The town itself is a prosperous center with active streetlife.
Once you get away from the busy roads and into the pedestrianized old town, it is a pleasant place indeed, with several beautiful plazas, and well worth a visit.
A series of thermal springs make it a great spot to banish chills too.
    Background Ourense.
Although tradition claims that the city's name derives from OURO, meaning gold, it actually comes from the warm springs; the Roman Town was named "Aquae Urentes" (warm waters).
It was later an important City of the Suevish Kingdom, and later of the Visigoths.
As an important linking point between Galicia and the rest of Spain, Ourense flourished after its repopulation during the Reconquista.
Following the decline that seemed to affect almost every city in Spain at some point, it is now a prosperous region, thriving as Capital of this significant agricultural Province.

OURENSE - LA GALICE - LE BAS MINHO.
    Ourense, C.P. 3200, 109 000 hab.
