Alcoutim was reconquered during the reign of King Sancho II in 1240. The town of Alcoutim was not repopulated until the reign of King Dinis, who granted it a charter in 1304 and granted it to the Military Order of Sant'Iago (Saint James). Beautiful Castle including Museum. A porta norte mantém, aproximada- mente, as características primitivas.

  2. In the time of the Roman occupation a number of mines were established. The ores dug from them were melted locally, then shipped down the Guadiana River to the Mediterranian and from there to the four corners of the Roman Empire. Alcoutim´s origins are presumably linked to the fact that it is situated at the place where the Guadiana River becomes tidal.Turismo Alcoutim 00351 281 546 179, GNR Alcoutim 00351 281 546 208.

Conquered during the reign of King Sancho II, in 1240, the town of Alcoutim was not repopulated until that of King Dinis, who granted it a charter in 1304 and, in view of its strategic position in relation to the neighbouring kingdom of Castile, granted it to the Military Order of Sant´Iago (St. James). At the time of the wars between Portugal and Castile in the 14th Century, a peace treaty between Kings Fernando I and Henrique was signed in the middle of Guadiana River opposite of Alcoutim. 4. Alcoutim. Among the least travelled routes in Algarve is the peaceful road along the Rio Guadiana, second Stage of Caminho do Este de Portugal desde Tavira. It is a soothing meander through golden, furze-covered hills dotted with cork trees, olive and fig trees (N122). Alcoutim is the northernmost Algarve town,
and here it often seems as if time has stood still. Sunning dogs in the only sqaures in villages along Gaudiana River have priority, so you will have to park around them.
Breaks during the second stage in Monte Francisco at Teresa´s Rest."sabores da Beira", Taberna do Gil e Graca in Junqueira, Taberna Anastacio on the right side square Azinhal, Café Albertos in Alcaria (Pilgrims-menu), and in Foz de Odeleite at Rest. 5. Alcoutim, historical centre. Although it has lost the ramparts that for centuries surrounded it, and despite some modern additions, Alcoutim's steep and narrow streets retain much of the calm atmosphere typical of an Algarvean hill town.
A few minutes' walk is enough to discover simple single-storey houses hundreds of years old and the tall white walls of the Misericórdia (Mercy) Church. To finish off, stroll down to the simple hermitage of Santo António (St. Anthony), the former residence of the Counts of Alcoutim.
Afterwards, enjoy a moment's rest in the company of a cool drink on an esplanade by the water's edge, and take in the sight of fishing boats returning with their catch, sailing yachts achored in the little marina, and the Spanish town of Sanlúcar de Guadiana on the opposite shore of Guadiana River.

  6. Alcoutim, 3rd Stage Caminho do Este de Portugal desde Tavira, Foz de Odeleite - Guerreiros do Rio to Alcoutim. Following Guadiana River by Álamo, Guerreiros do Rio, Montinho das Laranjeiras to Alcoutim.
The blue of the river framed by the cool green of riverside vegetation, of fertile orchards and vegetable
gardens. The dark ochre of hills as round as rolled pebbles, flecked with colour by cistus plants, holm oaks and the occasional olive tree. Houses with walls of schist or baked mud white with the dazzle of lime, huddled together in hamlets lost among the hills. Such contrasts are to be found in Alcoutim and the surrounding municipality, where, even in mid-winter, thousands of almond trees burst into pale pink-white blossom. There are open spaces whose natural beauty remains unspoilt, where a multitude of wild flowers are to be found and a fascinating variety of bird species can be observed.

  7. Cataplana, this delicious regional dish is named after the tin or copper wok-type pan used to prepare the meal.
There are several different varieties but basically a "Cataplana" is a mixed casserole, almost always containing "Amêijoas" (clams). Other ingredients can include lobster, prawns, fish, ham or spicy sausage.
A "Cataplana" is normally served for two people, but can often be ordered for four, six or more people, best two or more days up front.
Do not leave the Algarve without trying "Cataplana".

Alcoutim, occupied by the Romans since the 2nd Century B.C.(Alcoutinium).
Alcoutim is a remote border town in the north-east Algarve on the banks of Guadiana River, here the Frontier to Andalusia (Sanlúcar de Guadiana) Spain.
The seclusion is what gives the village its charm; very few tourists come here during the week.
Alcoutim was already a river port in Phoenician times, and it is presumed that the Celtiberians settled here too. In the 2nd Century BC the town became Roman and was called Alcoutinium.
In AD 415 the Alans conquered Alcoutim, followed shortly afterwards by the Visigoths; the Arabs took over in the 8th Century.
In 1240 the Portuguese under Sancho II conquered Alcoutim. In the early 14th Century Alcoutim was given to the knights of the Order of Santiago; in 1371 Portugal and Castile concluded the so-called Peace of Alcoutim here.
Fernando I and Henrique II of Castile signed the peace treaty after a formal meeting at the river, which ended armed conflicts between the two countries temporarily.
In the 17th Century Alcoutim was again the site of battles between Spain and Portugal after Portuguese noblemen revolted in 1640 and initiated the restoration of Portugal´s independence from Spain.
In 1668 Spain recorgnized Portugal´s independence conclusively.
Alcoutim experienced the last political conflicts at the time of the Liberal Wars in the 1830´s, when liberals and absolutist Miguelists fought each other on the Guadiana.

    Alcoutim.

Alcoutim, Castle and Main Church (Matriz).
Because of its location Alcoutim had an important strategic function from early on.
The present Castle goes back to a Moorish Fortification from the 11th Century, but there were probably larger fortified walls before.
It is known that King Dinis I ordered the town to renovate the walls and the Castle in 1304.
The Castle has not been used for military purposes since 1878.
It had various functions afterwards, serving for a while as a slaughterhouse.
In 1973 extensive archaeological excavations and restorations according to original plans were started.
Today the visitor will find an "exhibition of archaeological findings" in the Castle; old foundations were exposed during the excavations and can be seen here.
    Igreja Matriz S. Salvador, 00351 281 498 421.
The location of the parish church on the banks of Guadiana River is striking.
In place of a simple church without aisles, a new building with nave and side aisles was constructed in early Renaissance style between 1538 and 1554, financed by the Order of Santiago.
Only the attractive Renaissance doors have remained.
Notice the capitals inside as well as the baptistery with a 16th Century low relief.
