--------------------------------------------------------------- Tavira was once assumed to have been Roman Balsa, near Luz de Tavira, as we know now. It was reconquered from the Moors in 1239 (1242?), and raised to the rank of City in 1520. Igreja Matriz de Santiago de Tavira. --------------------------------------------------------------- Igreja da Misericórdia Tavira século XVI
-------------------------------------------------------------- During the ages after the Reconquest of Tavira, Pilgrims on their Way to Santiago de Compostela, were assisted in Tavira from 1425 on, in the "Hospital do Espirito Santo", which also served as Hostel or Refugio. Inside of the Misericórdia Church, built between 1541 to 1551, in Tavira we can see on tiles (1760) the Works of Compassion, 7 from the Body and 7 from the Spirit and scenes of the Life of Jesus Christ (see pictures above). --------------------------------------------------------------

  3. Igreja Matriz de Santiago, século Xlll, reconstruído c.1763, Rua D. Paio Peres Correia. As suas origens
remontam oa século Xlll. A primitiva constucâo terá
ficado bastante danificado com o sismo de 1755, tendo
o rei D. José I ordenado a aplicacâo dos rendimentos das confrarias erectas neste templo para financiamento da sua reconstrucâo, por volta de 1763.

  4. Tavira has a pleasant setting on an estuary of the Séqua river at the foot of a hill girded by the remains of ramparts built by King Dinis. The Roman bridge and Moorish walls testify of the town´s long history.
The earthquake in 1755 demolished most of Tavira´s buildings and silted up the harbour thus cutting the town off from the coast. In the past Tavira was an important center for tunafish and today continoues some of its fishing activities. The local beach is on an offshore bar.

  6. Tempting Tavira. One of the larger towns in the Eastern Algarve. Tavira has avoided the excesses of development and lost none of its grace. It elegantly borders both sides of the Rio Sequa, which becomes the Gilao as it slides under the seven-arched Roman-style bridge, the Ponte Romana, towards the sea.
With its estuary and outlying island, Tavira flourished in the 16th Century. But trade dwindled as the fish disappeared, and this lovely town composed of narrow streets, pastelcoloured patrician's houses, miniature towers, domes, unusual four-sided roofs and minarets today leads a quieter life.
There are more than 30 churches and chapels in Tavira, of which the most interesting are Igreja da Misericórdia,Igreja de Santa Maria and Igreja de Santiago, the starting point of "O Caminho do Este de Portugal", the Historical Pilgrimage from Tavira to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, by the Eastern Provinces of Portugal, since the 14th Century.

  7. Best period for Pilgrimming, Best time for visiting Algarve.
The Algarve is popular all year round by virtue of its excelent climate. When northern Europe shivers through the WINTER it is possible, if not perhaps to sunbade, or at least to enjoy lunch or a game of tennis or golf in shorts and polo.
As it is so far south (Faro is on the same latitude, 37°
N, as Tunis, Sicily and southern Greece) the sun is always agreeably high. Having said that, rain is always a possibility in the winter and you should pack a warm jacket to cope with the odd bout of chilly weather.
Many regulars rate SPRING (March to May) as the best time to visit; it is warm rather than hot, the wild flowers are lovely and the threat of rain is receding.
SUMMERS are very warm but there is generally a cooling breeze on the coast. September and October
are often warm and occasionally even quite hot, but evenings can start to become a little bit cooler.
So for Pilgrims and tourists "O Caminho do Este de Portugal desde Tavira" is in perfect conditions for walking and cycling. Always safety first! Bom Caminho.
