    Crato - Flor da Rosa.
Some kms south of Nisa, next Stage, the road back to Estremoz EN245, we come to Flor da Rosa, the Convent which dates back to 1356.
It was founded by the Order of Knights Hospitallers of Saint John.
An eclectic building, with a solid Gothic Cloister, which was used as a Monastery until the end of last Century.
Nowadays it is a Pousada - Hotel, that can be visited.
Two royal marriages took place in Crato, a few kilometers south on the same EN245-road.
The first was that of King Manuel I, who married Leonor of Spain in 1518(his third marriage), the second was seven years later when King Joao III married Catarina of Spain.
The main square of Crato is dominated by a splendid
15th-Century stone veranda, the "Varanda do Grao-Prior", which is all that survives of the former priors' residence in the town.
    Bom Caminho.

Crato, with 2 Roman Bridges close by, was from the mid-14th Century on, the Headquarters of a Branch of the Hospitallers, known as the Order of Crato.
The last of its Grand Priors was Dom António, a bastard of Infante Luis and Violante Gomes, who in1580 was the rival of Philip II of Spain, in his claim of the Portuguese Throne.
As early as 1350, Crato became the seat of a Priory for the Order of the Knights Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, which later became the Order of the Knights of Malta.
The title of Grand Prior of Crato was bestowed up until
    the late 16th Century.
In 1356 the Command of the Knights' Residence was transfered to the Monastery-Fortress in the neighbouring village of Flor da Rosa.
Crato however retained its role as a Priory.
Crato's Castle was burnt in 1662 by Don Juan of Austria, but some of the old houses can still be seen.
    Mosteiro de Flor da Rosa.
The Monastery-Fortress of the Order of the Knights of Malta was built in 1356 by Prior Àlvaro Goncalves Pereira, father of Nuno Àlvares Pereira, who defeated the Castilians at the Battle of Aljubarrota.
Within the Monastery-Fortress a group of fortified buildings are connected inside of a crenellated perimeter wall.
The Church has extremely well been restored, the simplicity of its lines and the height of its nave are outstanding.
The small flower-decked cloisters in the center are robust in design, but are given an overall elegance by their graceful Late Gothic network vaulting.
The Refectory has beautiful vaulting supported by 3 twisted columns.
The village of Flor da Rosa is since long, a center for manufacturing of Pottery, specialy "Cacoila", round cooking bowls.
